AMRITSAR: Customs department launched the advance passengers information system (APIS) at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International airport on Friday. The system was inaugurated by Ananya Ray, chief commissioner, customs (preventive), Delhi zone at the airport. APIS is already operational at major airports of the country including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
Ananya informed that with the introduction of new system, arrival manifests would be received electronically from the airlines and would be fed into APIS application to enable the customs department to have prior information concerning passengers. While the APIS would facilitate customs clearance of genuine passengers at the airport, it would help customs in identifying suspects, she said.
She claimed that APIS application had been very effective and had already resulted in seizure of gold and other contraband goods in several cases by the customs department.
