Singapore police nabbed 71 smugglers

SINGAPORE: Seventy-one people have been arrested for suspected involvement in smuggling of drug and immigration offences, drink-driving and vice activities.

The police said in a statement that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led operations in Geylang, which started on Monday (May 11) and ended on Saturday morning.

Law enforcement officers from the Singapore Police Force, Central Narcotics Bureau, Singapore Customs, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, Ministry of Manpower, Singapore Civil Defence Force, and the Health Sciences Authority took part in the operations.

The officers conducted targeted raids and proactive checks at entertainment outlets, coffee shops, private residential units, hotels, and back-alleys in Geylang.

The operations resulted in the arrest of 71 people, comprising 46 men and 25 women, aged between 17 and 57.

Investigations by the relevant agencies are in progress.

The police said more of such enforcement operations could be expected as part of ongoing efforts to keep crime off the streets.
