CANADA: Ancestors of modern snakes may have still had their hind legs up to 110 million years ago – millions of years later than first thought.
In a first-of-its-kind analysis of ancient snakes, the scientists also said that they were nocturnal and stealthy, mostly targeting larger prey.
And, resolving a longstanding debate on the origin of snakes, the team added they likely evolved on land, instead of in the sea.
The research into the common ancestor of modern snakes was carried out by scientists from Yale University.
‘We generated the first comprehensive reconstruction of what the ancestral snake was like,’ said Dr Allison Hsiang from Yale’s Department of Geology and Geophysics, lead author of the study.
