HONG KONG:Two sampans loaded with HKD4 million-worth of smartphones and electronics have been intercepted in a small river between Hong Kong and China.
Hong Kong Customs swooped in on the two boats in the early hours of here the other morning as they travelled along a waterway in Tai Sang Wai, Yuen Long.
Officers found 23 cartons of electronics on each, containing 5,000 used smartphones, 200 used tablet computers and 10,000 other electronic parts.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for smuggling is HKD2 million and seven years’ imprisonment.
Investigations are still ongoing and police have not yet revealed if any arrests have been made.
