TAIPEI: Shares in Taiwan consolidated within a narrow range and closed almost flat Monday, dealers said.
The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange closed up 6.37 points, or 0.06 percent, at 9,645.17 after moving between 9,589.32 and 9,654.28, on turnover of NT$76.19 billion (US$2.5 billion).
Most electronics stocks lost steam except for certain Apple-concept shares.
Largan Precision Co. finished 0.14 percent higher at NT$3,465; Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. gained 1.37 percent to close at NT$147.5; and Hon Hai rose 0.41 percent to end at NT$96.9.
Shares of major airline companies were boosted, meanwhile, by news that Chinese tourists will be allowed to use Taiwan as a transit point to travel to other countries.
China Airlines increased 6.71 percent to close at NT$15.1; EVA Airways was up 6.87 percent to finish at NT$22.55; and TransAsia Airways moved up 6.7 percent to end at NT$10.35.
Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$2.76 billion-worth of local shares Monday.
