WASHINGTON: Researchers are warning that a newly discovered fault zone off the coast of Southern California could result in tsunami disasters for Los Angeles and San Diego, writes Slash Gear.
Residents of these areas are well aware of the earthquake risk, but future threats could come from the sea, according to a recent exploration of underwater fault lines. If these fault lines prove to be active, the geological fractures could lead to 7.9 to 8.0 earthquakes, capable of sending surges of water toward Los Angeles and San Diego.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, used high-resolution mapping of two active fault zones in the California Continental Borderland. Previous studies had looked at the Santa Cruz-Catalina Ridge fault and the Ferrelo, but for this study the researchers gathered data from 2,796 miles of new depth measurements to identify how the crust had changed.
“The geometry of the fault systems shows evidence of multiple segments that could experience throughgoing rupture over distances exceeding 62 miles (100 kilometers),” the geologists wrote.
