SAN FRANCISCO: A US federal court in Anchorage, Alaska has penalised AML Ship Management GmbH with fines and community service payments for polluting waters off Alaska.
The German-owned car carrier must cough up a total of $800,000 for intentionally discharging 4,500 gallons of oily bilge and then compounding the offence by giving false records to the US Coast Guard.
AML was also placed on probation for three years for the offences which violated the Clean Water Act and the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships.
The company had admitted that its ship City of Tokyo was approximately 165 nautical miles south of the Aleutian Islands in late August 2014 when its chief engineer used an illegal pump system to discharge the polluted water overboard.
The financial punishment comprises $675,000 in criminal fines and $125,000 in community restitution.
