TOKYO: The Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Magali Silva announced that Peru is now shipping 254 new products to Japan, according to Andina news agency.

Since the Agreement of the Economic Association (EPA) went into effect three years ago between Peru and Japan, greater free trade has been established.

Minister Silva highlighted that since the agreement was integrated trade has advanced dramatically with Japan’s 127 million consumers. The EPA agreement will continue to develop and build the relationship in trade and bilateral relations.

“Today Peru exports 254 new products to Japan, the majority of these are from the non-traditional sector (94%), and there are 281 new companies exporting to that destination, of which 93.6% are MSMEs (small companies),” said Minister Silva.

In 2014, exports amounted to US$ 1.5 billion and the imports from Japan amounted to US$ 1.1 billion. This represents a favorable trade balance for Peru of about US$ 500 million.

Japan’s interest in Peru was recently recognized in the form of the Peruvian fruit, cherimoya.

“We have hosted trade missions from Japan that have identified Peruvian products to import including, among them, the cherimoya,” said Sierra Exportador CEO, Alfonso Velasquez.
