Japan stocks surge 0.07% at end of session

TOKYO: Japan stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Glass, Finance & Investment and Insurance sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 added 0.07%.

The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. (TOKYO:8750), which rose 6.30% or 141.0 points to trade at 2379.5 at the close. Meanwhile, Ebara Corp. (TOKYO:6361) added 4.44% or 27.0 points to end at 635.0 and T&D Holdings, Inc. (TOKYO:8795) was up 4.20% or 79.0 points to 1958.5 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:7735), which fell 5.27% or 47.0 points to trade at 844.0 at the close. Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TOKYO:9501) declined 4.83% or 36.0 points to end at 710.0 and Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (TOKYO:1332) was down 4.01% or 15.0 points to 359.0.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1072 to 810 and 1 ended unchanged.

Shares in The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. (TOKYO:8750) rose to all time highs; gaining 6.30% or 141.0 to 2379.5. Shares in T&D Holdings, Inc. (TOKYO:8795) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 4.20% or 79.0 to 1958.5.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 0.86% to 18.39.

Crude oil for July delivery was down 0.49% or 0.29 to $59.34 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in July fell 0.31% or 0.20 to hit $63.60 a barrel, while the August Gold contract fell 0.23% or 2.70 to trade at $1182.20 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was down 0.08% to 124.16, while EUR/JPY fell 0.36% to 139.59.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.20% at 95.53.
