The euro was quoted at $1.1208-1209 and 139.41-44 yen against $1.1233-1243 and 139.74-84 yen in New York and $1.1259-1260 and 139.93-97 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.

In New York, the dollar took the upper hand against the yen on hopes of improvement in the U.S. labor market following fewer-than-expected weekly initial claims for unemployment benefits, dealers said.
