PARIS: Dinosaur bones are being unearthed in Queensland’s outback as planning ramps up on a multi-million-dollar natural history museum.
The Australian Age of Dinosaurs (AAoD) at Winton, north-west of Longreach, has been conducting its annual dig for fossils on two remote stations west of the town.
Volunteers from across the country have been working with scientists, searching for bones dating back 95 to 98 million years old.
Dr Stephen Poropat from AAoD said some interesting fossils had already been discovered at one of the sites.
“We are looking for a Sauropod dinosaur — so a long-necked dinosaur with four elephant like legs and then a long tail — and we know that because we have found some of its back bone and some of its ribs,” he said.
“We have dozens of sites littered on properties near Winton and we are finding dinosaurs on all of them.
“It is really drawing tourists to the towns — Winton has a museum, there are museums in Richmond and Hughenden as well, and they are helping to keep these towns busy.”
AAoD executive chairman David Elliott said two weeks of digging so far had been tough going, but they had uncovered some significant finds.
