NEW YORK: Android M has introduced some nifty tricks under the hood that are sure to deal with Android’s major flaws as an operating system. The OS is open sourced and applications have deep synchronisation with the device which can amount to battery drainage, even when the device is in standby mode. Android M will deal with this problem by introducing a new Doze feature.
Doze is like a deeper slumber for the device. Applications that ran in the background, even when the device was on standby, will not be actively synced any more. The user will have an option to exempt the necessary apps from the no-sync list but most of the applications that require connectivity all the time will be curbed down to the necessities.
According to a report from Computer Base, a Nexus 5 running on Android M out-performed its counterpart running on Lollipop by a huge margin. The devices were compared in terms of standby time. The Nexus 5 with Lollipop lost 4 per cent of juice after 8 hours of standby, whereas the Nexus device running Android M lost a meagre 1.5 per cent. After 24 hours the Lollipop device lost 12 per cent of juice but the Android M version just lost 4.5 per cent of charge. After 2 days of standby the Lollipop version lost 24 per cent of battery whereas the Android M version just lost 9 per cent. The Nexus 5 with Lollipop used the latest 5.1.1 update. The Android M version was able to provide 2.7 times the battery life that could be extracted from the device running Lollipop 5.1.1. The 200hr standby time will be dramatically increased to 533 hours with the use of Android M.
This new feature will sort one of the longest running issues with Android. The final built might get a more polished version of the feature including other nifty developments.
