Oppo introduces new budget devices Neo 5 and Neo 5s

BEJING: Oppo has introduced new devices with the name Neo 5 (2015) and the Neo 5s. The Neo 5 is the new 2015 model of the original Neo 5 that launched last year, it continues to be a rather disappointing smartphone although the updated model offers a decent enough upgrade over its predecessor. As for the Neo 5s, it is a boosted version of the normal Neo 5 with some added features and hardware.

While Oppo has given the Neo 5 (2015) some differentiators, if you are familiar with last year’s model then you will see nothing radically new here. The handset comes with a 4.5-inch 480p display, 1GB of RAM alongside a quad-core MediaTek MT6582, and a 2000mAh battery. There is now 8GB of internal storage, a micro SD card slot support (up to 32GB).

The Neo 5s comes with micro SD support up to 128GB, a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, and LTE (which the Neo 5 lacks). Elsewhere the specs are the same, aside from Oppo including technology that lets the user look at the screen for longer without fatigue in the eye. Both variants come with a 8 megapixel rear shooter and LED flash.

It is not encouraging to see Oppo deliver these handsets with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, and considering the company’s patchy form in updating devices we are doubtful that the Neo 5?s will ever see Lollipop, let alone Android M later this year.

Oppo has not confirmed when these handsets will land or how much they will cost, but considering they are rather poorly spec’d, we think they will need to be bargains to gain much traction.
