AFRICA: A West African chimp has been caught on camera having a cheeky drink from a container of palm wine.
The container was installed below a tap built into the crown of a raffia palm to collect sap which, over time, had fermented into wine.
Seeing the container unattended, the opportunistic chimp decided to steal a sip of the sweet drink.
At least 51 other instances have been reported of chimpanzees drinking palm wine in the Bossou region of Guinea, New Scientist reports.
Not everyone however is convinced that the chimps are intentionally boozing it up.
Katherine Milton from the University of California, Berkley believes the chimpanzees may be more interested in the sugar content of the drink than the alcohol.
