GOULBURN: Two men have been arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle a banned drug into a Goulburn prison on Sunday.

A 24-year-old man was being processed inside the Goulburn Correctional Centre’s visitor’s area about 10.30am when he was noticed by a dog handler, NSW police said.

When the man was questioned he revealed a packet that was hidden on his body.

Inside the package was a number of balloons, each containing individual packets of a substance believed to be amphetamine.

The man was arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station where he was questioned further.

Police arrested a second man in the correctional centre’s carpark about 2pm.

Police allege they found cash, suspected to be stolen, during a search of the 34-year-old man’s car.

He was also arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with knowingly taking part in the supply of drugs and holding goods believed to be stolen in his custody.

The 24-year-old was charged with supplying a prohibited drug and attempting to bring drugs into place of detention without authority.

Both men were refused bail and will appear in Goulburn Local Court on Monday.

The incident comes three days after a correctional services employee was charged with smuggling illegal items into the same Goulburn prison.

Detectives began an investigation last week after contraband, including prescribed medication and two mobile phones, was discovered inside the centre.
