Sony Xperia smartphones might use USB Type-C ports from now on

USB Type-C, a potentially flexible way to transmit power and data, may soon find its way to Sony Mobile’s smartphones.

Takeshi Nitta, a program manager at Sony Mobile, said this at a technology workshop in Taipei, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported Tuesday.

“Of course we’re investigating (USB Type-C),” he was quoted in the report as saying.

Nitta was discussing the development of Sony’s Xperia Z3+ flagship phone.

However, the report said Sony Mobile has yet to come up with specific plans for the new standard, which Apple already adopted for its new MacBook.

Nitta said the industry may need more time to adapt to the new standard from the current USB 2.0 and 3.0. USB Type-C, a reversible connector for power and data, potentially allows for slimmer devices.

Aside from Apple, Google is also making plans for USB Type-C, with CNA quoting product manager Adam Rodriguez as saying USB Type-C may be used in Chromebooks and Android phones.
