LONDON: Microsoft’s video and voice calling app can now offer live audio translations of six of the world’s most spoken languages.

When the feature initially launched in beta in December, it could support spoken English, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin. But with the latest linguistic additions the app should be useful to approximately 30% of the world’s population.

The new features are in addition to the 50 languages the app supports via type-to-translate text messaging.

And as well as supporting more spoken languages, the app’s performance is also getting much better thanks to six months of further development and testing.

However, there’s a catch. Although Skype’s standard video and voice calling app works across all platforms and even via the Web browser, the real-time translator app is only compatible with desktops running Windows 8 or above.
