MEXICO CITY: A total of 24 electric and natural gas transmission, distribution and generation projects worth $9.74 billion will be put out to bid, the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, said.

The contracts cover five natural gas pipelines, three natural gas branch lines, four electric power plants, three electric transmission projects and nine distribution projects, CFE director Enrique Ochoa said.

The projects will benefit 24 of Mexico’s 32 states, adding nearly 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) to the gas pipeline network, 1,442 MW of generating capacity to the electric grid and 2,960 kilometers (1,839 miles) to the electricity distribution network.

The five new pipelines will allow natural gas from northern Mexico to be shipped to the central and Bajio regions, among the most industrialized parts of the country, the CFE chief said.

The new pipelines will connect to other ducts already put out to bid and currently under construction, Ochoa said.

The five projects are the Laguna-Aguascalientes pipeline; the Villa de Reyes-Aguascalientes-Guadalajara pipeline; the Tula-Villa de Reyes pipeline; the undersea pipeline that will link south Texas with Tuxpan; and the Nueces-Brownsville pipeline, which will also connect to the network in the United States.
