Airport customs detains 2 passengers, seizes 76 lakh worth gold

VASCO : Two separate bids to smuggle gold into the state were thwarted by air intelligence unit of customs department at Dabolim airport, two passengers detained and gold worth Rs 76 lakh seized within 24 hours on Sunday and Monday.According to joint commissioner of customs S K Sinha, in the first case reported on Sunday, during a routine search operation, 1.4 kilogram gold worth Rs 38 lakh was found on a passenger Pawan Kalanvi of Thane-Maharashtra onboard Air India flight.

In second case, 1.4 kilogram gold was found in the baggage of Santosh Malgaonkar of Kharghar, Navi-Mumbai Maharashtra who had travelled to Goa from Dubai by Air India flight early morning on Monday. During investigation, he said that the gold was handed over to him by  Faizal Azmal in Dubai.
