KARACHI: Pakistan is suffering from Internet service due to undersea optic fibre cable disruptions.  Though the main internet service provider, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), said restoration work had begun, it did not come up with a certain timeline to fix the problem.

“The international submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 has developed a fault in Arabian Sea, causing an impact on internet service in the region, including Pakistan,” said a Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited statement. “The restoration work has been initiated by the international consortium that manages the submarine cable systems.”

According to the statement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has undertaken measures to ensure internet connectivity to its customers. But because the fault is in the cables, internet users may experience slow browsing.

The company regretted inconvenience caused to its customers and asked them to contact helpline 1236 for further information.

In 2008, the optic fibre cable suffered disruptions twice in less than three months.

In 2005, severe damage to the country’s only link at that time had caused an internet blackout for a week.
