Argentina exports 137,200 tonnes seafood in Jan-April

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina exported 137,200 tonnes of seafood products from January to April this year, 1.2 per cent more than in the same four-month period of 2014, totalling USD 408.7 million, an amount that represents an increase of 4.7 per cent year on year.

According to the latest Situation Report prepared by the Directorate of Fisheries Economics of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries, 25,158 tonnes of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were sold abroad, 31.3 per cent more than in the first four-month period of 2014 (19,847 tonnes), for USD 158.9 million, an increase of 22.6 per cent year on year.

Export volumes of stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura) also grew, with 5,372 tonnes shipped (67.5 per cent increase) and of hoki (Macruronus magellanicus), of which 4,703 tonnes (42.8 per cent more) were shipped.

In value terms, stingray exports rose by 85 per cent, to USD 10.1 million and those of hoki grew by 25.2 per cent, to USD 9.2 million, as the report to which FIS.com had access points out.

In the case of hake (Merluccius hubbsi), exports generated revenues of USD 65.1 million, 22.5 per cent less than in the same quarter of 2014 (USD 84 million). And the volume of exports contracted by 23.7 per cent, to 25,901 tonnes.

In the first four months of 2015, squid (Illex argentinus) export value also fell by 19.8 per cent, totalling USD 43.2 million although the export volume grew by 2.3 per cent to 39,643 tonnes.

Between January and April this year 3,640 tonnes of whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) were sent abroad, 42.6 per cent less than in the same period of 2014. The value of these shipments fell by 38.5 per cent to USD 5,1 million.
