SINGAPORE: Five suspected drug offenders, including a man believed to be a drug syndicate leader, were arrested here the other day and about 2.31kg of heroin seized, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) announced.

CNB officers first arrested two suspected drug runners – two Singaporean men aged 51 and 45 – at the Queen Street area at about 6.10am here the other day.

Officers had watched as the men retrieved a plastic bag containing heroin deposited in a trash bin earlier by another suspected drug courier, a 43-year-old Malaysian who came on a motorcycle.

The Malaysian was arrested at his workplace after he was tailed by CNB officers. Information gleaned from the first two suspected drug runners led to the arrest of a suspected syndicate leader, a 44-year-old Singaporean man, in a unit at North Bridge Road.

A 48-year-old Malaysian man, allegedly his accomplice, was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint as he was attempting to leave the country in his lorry.

The heroin is estimated to have a street value of more than S$161,000, CNB said in a news release.

If convicted of drug trafficking, the five could face the death penalty.
