Excise and Taxation Dept fails to recover Rs 12.53m professional tax

KARACHI: The Excise and Taxation Department of Sindh government has failed to recover professional tax to the tune of Rs 12.53 million from department’s officials in whole province, it is learnt.

Interestingly, the Auditor General of Pakistan had also pointed out the non-realization of the amount. However, no measures were taken to ensure recovery of the dues from the excise and taxation officials, sources told Customs Today.

According to Section-11 of the Sindh Finance Act, 1964, read with Seventh Schedule to the Sindh Finance Ordinance 2000 and Rules 7 and 15 of the Sindh Professions, Trades Callings and Employment Tax Rules 1976, “Professional Tax on professions trades callings and employment is recoverable from all person/establishment/companies engaged in activities and mentioned in schedule thereof”.

The sources alleged that the excise and taxation officials showed least concerns towards the recovery of the said taxes that resulted in loss to the provincial exchequer.

According to break up, the ETO Property Tax-I, district Benazirabad had to recover Rs 500,000, ETO Property Tax-I Sanghar Rs 600,000, ETO Property Tax-I Hyderabad Rs 2.42 million, ETO Sukkur Rs 170,000, ETO Ghotki Rs 600,000, ETO Thatta Rs 120,000, ETO Jamshoro Rs 170,000 million, ETO Division-I Karachi Rs 1.72 million, ETO Division-III Karachi 4.60 million, ETO P-I Karachi Rs 1.40 million, ETO P-II&IV Karachi Rs 210,000, ETO P-II&IV Karachi Rs 1.31 million, ETO P-III Karachi Rs 100,000, ETO Badin Rs 140,000.
