Mumbai customs seizes 6.2kg gold worth Rs 1.54cr, arrests 7 smugglers

NEW DELHI: The Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs today seized 6.2 kg of gold worth Rs 1.54 crore in two different seizures and arrested seven persons, including six members of a family, at the international airport here. All those arrested had arrived from Dubai.

In the first case, Shadman Shaikh was searched and 23 gold biscuits of 116 grams each, valued at Rs 65.8 lakh in total, were recovered from him. He was subsequently arrested.

In the second case, AIU officials arrested six members of a family and recovered 3.6 kg of gold worth Rs 88.35 lakh from them upon arrival from Dubai.

The arrested passengers were identified as Jignesh Shah, Hema (Jignesh’s wife), Padma (his mother), Ashvin Kumar Gondaliya, Alka (Ashvin’s wife) and Asmita Thesia (Alka’s sister).

They had concealed the gold in specially created pockets in their dresses, Customs officials said.
