KINGSTON: A police constable assigned to the VIP Protective Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) implicated in the guns-for-drug trade was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Constable Kenneth Reid was remanded pending an outstanding report from the Communication, Forensic and Cybercrimes Unit (CFCU) of the JCF.
Reid and his co-accused Sheldon Walters and Kerry-Ann Smith were charged on May 29 under Criminal Justice Suppression of Criminal Organisation Act 2014 and the Anti-Gang Act.
All three were charged for being members of a criminal organisation.
Reid is facing an additional charge of providing a benefit to a criminal organisation.
Reports are that on various dates the suspects conspired to engage in the drugs-for-guns trade between criminal elements in the Republic of Haiti and Jamaica.
Walters, who is allegedly known to be a significant member of one of the major gangs operating in St Catherine, and Smith, are both from Kitson Town in the parish. The three were picked up by the police in St Catherine and Red Hills, St Andrew.
When they appeared in court yesterday, the court was told that the CFCU had information from a bank in Haiti revealing that monies were allegedly sent to Reid via Western Union; however, the report was not complete.
A July 15 mention date was subsequently set. The CFCU report is expected to be completed by then.
