Gepco takes action against 34,364 consumers for electricity pilferage

SIALKOT: The special surveillance teams of Gepco have caught as many as 34,364 consumers red-handed while stealing electricity through different ways.

The action was part of its ongoing special campaign against electricity thieves in Gujranwala Region’s all six districts – Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Gujranwala – during the last month.

According to senior Gepco officials, Gepco teams caught 33,818 domestic consumers, 203 commercial consumers, 126 tube well consumers and 217 industrial consumers while stealing electricity in Gujranwala Region.

Gepco senior officials got separate cases registered against 35 chronic accused for electricity pilferage. Besides, the officials also sent Rs 89 million detection bills to all the accused for power pilferage by adding as many as Rs 9.4 million worth of additional electricity consumption units in their monthly bills.

Gepco is yet to recover Rs 68 million from the said accused consumers, while special recovery teams have been formulated to ensure early recovery of the rest of the amounts of fines from them.
