PATNA: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Thursday arrested two persons and seized Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of Rs 5.89 lakh from their possession in East Champaran district.

The DRI sleuths acted on a specific information that two smugglers – Ravindra Yadav and Munna Yadav — both in their late 20s, with a consignment of fake notes had boarded a bus to their native place at Areraj in East Champaran. “We intercepted the bus on Muzaffarpur-Motihari highway under Chakia police station and arrested the two men,” a DRI source said.

All seized notes were of Rs 1,000 denomination and of very high quality, printed by Pakistan-based anti-India elements, the source said and added, “The consignment of FICN was brought from Bangladesh and arrived in Patna from Malda in West Bengal by train. The two arrested persons have admitted to their involvement in fake currency racket for quite some time and confessed to have brought fake notes worth over Rs 1 crore in the past three months.” Both the accused have been forwarded to judicial custody at Muzaffarpur jail.

DRI sources said intelligence inputs suggest that smuggling of FICN can increase in view of upcoming state assembly election. As per the stats available with DRI officials, FICN of about Rs 2,500 crore is pumped into India every year.
