Senate body agrees to resolve issues of textile industry

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Textile Industry agreed on Thursday to play its role in resolving the matters between the ministry and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTAMA).

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Senator Mohsin Aziz here at the parliament house on Thursday.

Chairman standing committee on Textile Senator Mohsin Aziz said that textile industry is backbone of the country’s economy. He said “We have accepted the 70 percent of the recommendation proposed by APTAMA.”

“We would resolve the different issues faced by textile industry and the energy would be provided to the industries on regular basis”, he added.

He said that to compete with other regional countries, level playing field would be provided to industry in local market and mutual treaties with these countries would be made.

Chairman APTAMA, S.M Tanveer proposed the way forward and presented the issues faced by textile industry.

He proposed to strengthen the local textile industry and commerce, improve power shortage, investment support scheme, Long Term Financing (LTF), EFT to all sectors, lift ban on expansion of gas and electricity industry connection and release pending funds of industry.

Secretary textile industry, Amir Marwat said that textile policy 2015-16 focuses on value addition and the ministry is fully committed to enhance the textile export for economic growth of the country.

He said exports in knitwear and towel industry to European countries has increased by 20 percent.

The meeting was attended among others by Senator Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Saleem Mandviwala,Samina Abid, Hari Ram and other officials from Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Ministires.
