BERLIN: Ferrari has revealed the 488 Spider, the most powerful mid-rear-engined V8 car to ever feature its retractable hard-top.

So, what powers the replacement for the 458 Spider? None other than the 3902cc turbocharged V8 that recently debuted in the 488 GTB, of course.

This mill is worth 492kW and 760Nm, which is enough to see the 488 Spider sprint from zero to 100km/h in three seconds. The 200km/h-mark arrives in just 8.7 seconds.

Designed around the concept of the retractable hard-top, the 488 Spider has a space frame chassis made of 11 different aluminium alloys combined with other noble metals. Ferrari claims that this yields the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness figures as the coupe.

The hard-top folds backwards in two overlapping sections, taking 14 seconds to fully retract or deploy.

We’ll know more once this new topless model is officially unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.
