JAKARTA: An Indianola woman is being charged with possessing contraband in a correctional institution, failure to affix a drug stamp and a controlled substance violation after allegedly smuggled more than 5 grams of methamphetamine into the Warren County Jail.

According to a report written by Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Van Gundy, Carole Steil, 54, of Indianola was pulled over on the R63 Highway at 7:30 p.m. near Norwalk on July 23.

According to the report, a drivers-side brake light of her truck was not working.

Upon further inspection, she did not have a license because it was barred and the truck was not insured.

According to the report, Van Gundy transported Steil to the Warren County Jail and left her with jail staff.

When he returned at approximately 10:30 p.m., he was told by Deputy Derek Konrad a baggie was found in the bathroom after Steil had used it.

“I looked in the baggie and observed 5 baggies containing a crystal substance,” according to Van Gundy’s report. “Each baggies contents were field tested positive for methamphetamine.”

According to the report, at least two people saw the baggie on the floor of the bathroom before it was noticed by Deputy Lisa Ohlinger.

Van Gundy later interviewed Steil about the baggie, but she stated it was not hers, according to the report.

Steil is now being held at the Warren County Jail on a $32,000 cash bond.
