Closure of Valuation Dept on Saturdays worries importers

KARACHI: The closure of the Directorate General of Valuation on Saturdays and Sundays is depriving the importers and clearing agents the opportunity to verify value-related complaints timely.

Surprising as it is, many of the staff at the Directorate favours reducing the weekly day-offs from two days to just one- that is Sunday being the only weekly day-off. For this reason, Customs Chief Collector Appraisement Nasir Masroor called under-invoicing a dilemma during his visit of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry on September 18. The statement highlights the vital link between the Customs Appraisement and Directorate General of Valuation. As is, valuation is one of the top reasons for disputes between the Customs and the importers and clearing agents. The staff favoring one-day weekly holiday at the Directorate of Valuation claimed that two weekly holidays are slowing down the workings of the Appraisement due to prolonged verification about the Customs values.
