Customs Court grants bail to Iranian tiles smuggling suspect

KARACHI: The Custom and Taxation Court, Karachi on Friday granted pre-arrest bail to the suspect allegedly involved in the smuggling of Iran origin tiles.

The bail was set at Rs 100,000 surety bond for Muhammad Usman, the proprietor of M/s Sitara-al-Usman, a goods forwarding agency.

Muhammad Usman and the proprietor of M/s Quetta Traders were booked for their involvement in the smuggling of Iranian tiles under Section 2(s), 16, and 157(2) of the Customs Act 1969.

According to the FBR’s Directorate of Intelligence and Investigations, following a tip-off a container loaded truck was caught on November 12, 2014 in SITE area, Karachi. On its examination, the container was found stuffed with a large quantity of foreign origin /non duty paid tiles.

The applicant’s counsel submitted that his client was innocent and implicated in the case. He alleged the investigation officer had let the prime suspect go.

He pleaded the judge to grant his client bail to enable him to join the proceedings and face the charges.
