JAKARTA: Total Indonesian coffee exports to Taiwan showed a 33 percent increase in the first semester of this year, as more young people embrace café culture in Taiwan.

The Head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Taiwan, Arief Fadillah, said on Friday that the coffee export value to Taiwan had jumped to US$10 million in the first six months of the year, up from $7.6 million in the same period last year.

He explained that the increase in sales was attributable to a change in Taiwan’s youth lifestyle, which has seen many young people start drinking coffee, and more and more coffee shops opening up.

“Franchised coffee shops are mushrooming there,” Arief said as quoted by tempo.co.

The chamber’s trade division head, Ikhwan Aman said Indonesian coffee variants from Sumatra (Mandheling), Sulawesi (Toraja) and Java (Jampit) were the most sought after among Taiwanese coffee buyers.

“They had previously been buying Indonesia coffee from third parties, like Japan,” Ikhwan said.

Therefore, to pounce on business opportunities, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Taiwan is organizing a visit for Taiwanese coffee buyers to come and see two coffee producing regions in Bali and East Java. Apart from introducing Indonesian coffee, the trip will also facilitate meetings between Taiwanese coffee importers and local coffee suppliers.
