Customs Judge Soofia fines Iranian tiles smuggler

KARACHI: Special Judge Customs and Taxation Court Soofia Latif imposed a Rs 50,000 fine on a convict who pleaded guilty of trying to smuggle Iranian tiles with an estimated market value of Rs 818,100 and over Rs 737,000 of duties and taxes involved.

According to FIR No.  M1975/DCI/Seiz/2014 dated September 5, 2014 registered by the Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation-FBR, Regional Office Karachi on September 4, 2014 accused convict Fazal Khan s/o Ameer Khan, a resident of Satellite Town, Quetta was arrested after being stopped near Kathore Super Highway, Karachi while driving a truck.

Yaghoot- and Sadat-brand Iranian ceramic tiles of different colours and sizes were seized from truck (QAF 8075) and the driver was arrested.

Around 489 cartons of Yaghoot ceramic tiles, each containing 12 pieces of 1.5 square metre tiles; 552 cartons of Yaghoot ceramic tiles, each containing 12 pieces of 1.2 square metre tiles; assorted colour and 688 cartons, each containing six pieces of 1 square metre of Sadat tiles of different colours were seized.

The court convicted the accused after he pleaded guilty. The accused paid the fine and was released.
