MUMBAI: The grieving family of deceased Customs appraiser Rishi Ranjan, who allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning, protested at the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) office at Churchgate demanding a detailed probe into the incident.

Ranjan’s family members, including his wife and mother, refused to leave the DRI premises till late night on Monday amid heavy police bandobast at the location. The Customs officer had been suspended on July 29 during a DRI probe into a case of illegally smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 4.24 crore.

Additional director general DRI, P K Dash told TOI that he had met the officer’s father and elder brother. “I said our investigation has been fair and the officer was not targeted,” Dash said.

Meanwhile, the Panvel GRP summoned a senior Customs officer, posted with JNPT, to record his statement pertaining to the inquiry of the suicide. A lengthy letter, written by Ranjan, that was found near the suicide spot, narrates the entire incident up to his suspension. While, the letter is being studied by the GRP, Ranjan has apparently not mentioned in the letter that he was innocent, nor that he was contemplating suicide.
