US border customs seizes 5kg meth from vehicle

McALLEN: A Pharr man was sentenced to federal prison Tuesday after U.S. Border Patrol agents found more than five kilos of methamphetamine in his vehicle in July 2014 near Falfurrias, according to a news release.

Gerardo Garza-Montenegro pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine April 20, according to a release.

The 34-year-old man approached the Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias while driving a Cadillac Deville when a service dog alerted officials of possible narcotics, according to the release.

During a secondary inspection Border Patrol agents found more than 5 kilograms of methamphetamine between two fire extinguishers in the trunk, according to the release.

U.S. District Judge John D. Rainey sentenced Garza-Montenegro to serve more than nine years in prison, followed by four years of supervised release.

The 34-year-old has been in federal custody since his arrest and will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, according to the release.
