LIMA: The global, fresh produce news portal found that Peruvian exports in the first half of 2015 did not perform well, with a drop of 15.5%. At the same time, however, fresh or dried mango was worth US$ 151 million in the same period, representing an increase of 26.2%, reports Fresh Plaza.
The Netherlands recorded the highest amount of Peruvian mango imports at 41% of the total exported out of the South American country, or US$ 62 million. Following the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom recorded the most, with US$ 45 million and US$ 16 million respectively.
Fresh Plaza reports that mango exporting companies that performed the best were Dominus and Camposol, who both shipped about US$ 11 million. Following those were Sunshine Export, with $10 million dollars (- 1.3%), and Frutos Tropicales del Norte and FLP del Peru, with $7 million dollars each (+ 420.2% and – 0.1% respectively).
Mangos aren’t the only largely exported item of Peru’s non-traditional agro-exports. Asparagus has been a top performer in the last few years (fresh or chilled). SUNAT data found that asparagus shipments in the first half of 2015 totaled US$ 145 million, representing 17.2% more than in the same period in 2014, says Fresh Plaza.
In comparison to mangoes, asparagus exports have grown at an annual average rate of 7.2% according to Fresh Plaza.
The growth of mango production is impressive this year, considering that last winter caused a drop of production by about 35% due to warm weather conditions that spoiled crops.
