DOHA: Qatar Customs is the least affected by bribery among GCC countries, the General Authority of Customs (GAC) said here the other day, citing a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit at The Economist, the leading international news, politics, business, finance, science and technology publication.

On a scale of 0-100, Qatar Customs stood at 79.9, compared to the general average of GCC at 65.8, according to Kuwaiti daily Al-Qabas, which quoted The Economist. Qatar is followed by the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

“Such high classification of Qatar Customs came as an outcome of the GAC’s efforts to develop its staff ethically and professionally at various levels,” a statement said.

GAC has been promoting integrity as a key priority among the values of work.

A booklet distributed to all GAC staff titled, “The ethics of the custom officer” highlights the ethics of the profession.

It includes a number of situations that the officer may encounter and how his reaction should be, in case of being offered a bribe or any other material incentives to undermine his duties.

The GAC has managed to maintain 100% Qatarisation in all the departments at the land, sea or airports, the statement added.
