SILIGURI: Acting on a tip-off, BSF personnel and the Siliguri Customs Department on Monday night intercepted two trucks without valid documents carrying 54 heads of cattle.
The incident took place at the link road of BOP Bhatpara -93 Battalion BSF under the Kotwali police station.
The cattle were reportedly being taken from Chaupokharia in Bagdogra to Sonapur in Falakata, Cooch Behar to be smuggled into Bangladesh. Four persons have been detained along with two trucks. According to BSF sources, the cattle belonged to Mohammad Selim (35) of Jhapa district in Nepal. He is suspected to be one of the kingpins of the thriving cattle smuggling racket. Customs officials said the total value of the livestock and trucks is estimated to be about Rs30.025 lakh.
The smugglers had loaded each truck with 27 heads of cattle and the animals had been tightly squeezed in.
