WASHINGTON: Scientists have shared that ice calving has happened in Jakobshavn glacier. In the ice calving, around 5 square miles if ice has been lost. The ice lost could cover the entire Manhattan island, said ESA officials.
As per scientists, the ice broke off between August 14 and August 16. The broken piece is 12.5 square kilometers across and has a depth of around 1,400 meters. Dr. Joughin said, “We are now seeing summer speeds more than four times what they were in the 1990s, on a glacier which at that time was believed to be one of the fastest, if not the fastest, glacier in Greenland”.
For more than 250 years, the Jakobshavn has been studied and the findings from these studies have helped scientists to understand the importance of glaciers and ice streams. It has also helped scientists know how sea levels are affected.
Researchers came to know about the ice calving event through radar images from Sentinel-1A. Jakobshavn glacier is the fastest moving glacier in the world. Scientists said that the glacier drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet producing around 10% of its icebergs.
