India police seize heroin worth Rs 7 crore in Moga

MOGA: The district police claimed to have arrested four notorious drug smugglers with 1.5 kg heroin from various places. Four vehicles also were impounded in this connection.  According to the police, the contraband is worth Rs 7 crore in the international market.

Jaspal Singh Dhami, in-charge of the Moga narcotic and drug cell said that the police had got a tip-off that some drug smugglers had entered the district for selling heroin in the area.

“Following the tip-off, we barricaded the main entry points across the district under the supervision of senior police officials. When a special police party stopped a Swift car near Badduwal village under Dharamkot subdivision, the car driver tried to flee from the spot, but the police party nabbed him after a short chase. During search, we found 500 gram heroin from the possession the occupant of the car identified as Ranjit Singh of Kot-Mohammad-Khan,” said the police official.

Dhami said, “In another case, 400 gram heroin was seized from Nishan Singh, a resident of Daulewala, who was travelling in an i20 car near Danewal village.”

The Moga CIA staff seized 300 gram heroin from Pippal Singh, a resident of Daulewala village in Moga. Prem Singh, in-charge of the CIA staff, said that his Scorpio car was also impounded.

Gurmeet Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), said that at another barricade, the police seized 300 gram heroin near Kokri Kalan village when  a police party searched a Swift Dzire at a barricade. Car driver Tersem Singh, a resident of Sherpur Takhtuwal (Ferozepur), was arrested,” said the DSP.

The DSP said that four different cases have been registered against all the four accused under sections 15, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. However, further investigations are underway, he added. A senior police official said that, during investigation, the special investigation team found that Ranjit Singh was a proclaimed offender (PO) of the Jagraon police in seven separate NDPS cases while six cases had been registered against Tersem Singh and 11 cases were registered against Nishan Singh.
