EL PASO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made six drug seizures Thursday and confiscated more than 500 pounds of marijuana and 10 pounds of cocaine, officials said.
Just before 5 p.m. at the Bridge of the Americas, a 2004 Toyota 4Runner was entering the U.S. from Mexico.
Officers said the driver, Romana Araceli Hernandez Lara, 37, appeared nervous and was selected for a secondary exam.
Officers noticed something odd about the vehicle’s engine and found a cocaine-filled bundle in the intake manifold. The seized drugs weighed about 10.55 pounds.
Lara, of El Paso, was turned over the federal agents in connection to the smuggling attempt.
“CBP officers remain vigilant knowing that smugglers are consistently attempting to evade the inspection process,” said Beverly Good, CBP El Paso port director. “Officer expertise, tools, technology and canine support all play a role in stopping these drug loads.”
