CANBERRA: Grain growers in Western Australia’s northern Wheatbelt have launched a social media campaign calling for support for genetically modified crops. Aimee Carson and her husband Kyle farm near Binnu, about 100 kilometres north of Geraldton.

They made a video and shared it on Facebook explaining why they grow GM canola on their farm and calling for farmers to have a choice in what they grow. Theirs is one of several that appeared online yesterday.

Ms Carson is one of the coordinators of the online campaign, she said with debate about the future of WA’s Genetically Modified Crop Free Areas Act, it seemed an ideal time to encourage people to do their own research about GM technology.

“We’re wanting that act to be repealed and allowing us as farmers the choice to … grow GM,” she said. Ms Carson said she wanted people to do their own research about GM technology and hoped the online campaign would motivate this.

“I ask why don’t you support GM, which is totally fine people can have their opinion, but the general consensus you get back is ‘I’m not really sure but everyone else seems to think it’s a bad idea so it can’t be good.’,” she said. “That’s not an educated opinion, I think you need to look into both sides of the debate,.”
