KUWAIT: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on renewable energy was signed between the Health Ministry and Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Results of scientific research is the backbone in achieving the ministry’s various goals, including the ones related to renewable energy, Education Ministry’s Undersecretary Dr Khaled Al-Sahlawi said after the signing ceremony Tuesday. The five-year MoU is ‘renewable’ and covers the conduct of studies and providing consultations requested by the ministry in the field of renewable energy, he added.

Meanwhile, KISR Director General Dr Naji Al-Mutairi said the MoU comes in response to Amiri directives of giving priority to renewable energy in order to secure 15 percent of local energy demand by 2030. Backed by its scientific expertise and logistics, as well as techniques to develop power efficiency, KISR, through the MoU, will provide blue prints for scientific projects within the ministry’s plans, he noted. Established in 1967, KISR’s initial role is to develop three fields of national importance: petroleum, desert agriculture, and marine biology. Since then, KISR’s role and responsibilities have expanded greatly to include the advancement of national industry and the undertaking of studies to address key challenges, such as Kuwait’s natural resources.
