Court grants protective bail to suspect involved in mega gold scam

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has granted protective bail to a suspect in five cases pertaining to the export of gold worth billions of rupees on fake customs clearance documents.

A single bench of SHC approved the bail for suspect Kashan Iqbal till September 8 with surety bond of Rs 25000 in each case.  The applicant’s counsel submitted that his client had nothing to do with the alleged gold scam, however, he was shown as accused in the charge-sheet submitted to the Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling. Subsequently, the trial court declared him absconder, issuing non-bailable warrants for his arrest.

He said that his client was ready to surrender before the court and face charges. He, therefore, requested the Court to grant him bail so that he could appear in trial court.

According to the details of the cases, the customs authorities had registered five cases against exporters including Saani Impex, BD Enterprises and Rubab Corporation, Makkah Enterprises, M/s Reaz Corporation for exporting gold worth billions of rupees on fake E-Forms, causing huge losses to the national exchequer.
