SAN ANTONIO: U.S. Border Patrol agents, working closely with Laredo Air Branch air interdiction agents and Bruni firefighters, seized more than one ton of marijuana from a burning pickup truck in Webb County.
The truck was abandoned Monday near Bruni, east of Laredo, after the driver of a 2012 Chevy Silverado refused to pull over for Border Patrol agents performing a routine vehicle stop, agents said.
The driver abandoned the truck and tried to hide in some nearby brush. Border Patrol agents from the Hebbronville station later found the abandoned truck on fire.
Laredo Air Branch air interdiction agents provided aerial support as Border Patrol agents located the driver and took him into custody. Bruni firefighters put out the flames, and Border Patrol agents were then able to pull several bundles and partially burned bales of marijuana out of the truck.
Agents said the amount of pot that they pulled out of the truck totaled 2,102 pounds, which has an estimated street value of $1.6 million.
The vehicle and driver were turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration agents for further investigation.
