AUSTIN: A woman has been arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle a 1-year-old boy through international bridge 1, according to court records released on the other day.
Olga Sanchez, 38, wanted to smuggle the boy in exchange for $2,000, states a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.
Sanchez, a U.S. citizen from Laredo, arrived Aug. 23 at the Gateway to the Americas International Bridge.
She was accompanied by her juvenile daughter-in-law and three children.
A Texas birth certificate was presented for a 1-year-old boy to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. The daughter-in-law claimed the boy was her son, records state.
Sanchez then stated that the boy was her grandchild, CBP said. CBP then referred the family to secondary inspection.
There, Sanchez allegedly admitted that the boy was a Mexican citizen with no legal documents.
“The defendant further admitted that she went to a restaurant in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to pick up the child in order to smuggle him into the United States,” reads the complaint.
After crossing the border, she had instructions to turn over the boy to a man who would’ve paid her $2,000, the complaint states.
Sanchez was charged with bringing in a person and falsely representing him as a U.S. citizen.
