NEW YORK: Federal agents patrolling Mission Bay found nearly 500 pounds of marijuana tucked into compartments on a pleasure boat, authorities said.
Federal maritime agents arrested three men after finding nearly 500 pounds of marijuana on a pleasure boat at Mission Bay.
Three Mexican men were arrested and the pot, with an estimated street value of $290,000, was confiscated along with the boat.
Marijuana with an estimated street value of $290,000 was seized at Campland on the Bay. Marine interdiction agents were on patrol about 3 p.m. Sunday when they noticed the boat, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jacqueline Wasiluk.
She did not say what attracted the agents’ attention, but they followed the boat to Campland on the Bay on Pacific Beach Drive. The boat was loaded onto a trailer and a Border Patrol dog was brought in to search the vessel.
The dog reacted to a scent and agents searched the boat, finding 95 bundles of marijuana in compartments near the berths, Wasiluk said. She said the bundles weighed a total of 482 pounds.
The three men, ages 19, 22 and 55, were booked into the downtown federal jail. Two of the men held border crossing cards and one is a legal, permanent resident of the U.S., Wasiluk said.
