LIMA: A Spanish-flagged gas transport ship was impounded by local authorities in the Peruvian port of Pisco after 211 kilograms of cocaine was found on board, along with a Venezuelan citizen who was not part of the crew, the Peruvian navy reported.
The port authorities at Pisco, 250 km (150 mi.) south of Lima, followed up on a tip of suspicious activities and inspected the gas-transport vessel Hispania Spirit, which was anchored in the bay and scheduled to sail for the Mexican port of Manzanillo, the navy said in a press release.
During the inspection, Peruvian coast guard and port personnel found suspicious bundles stashed in one of the ship’s compartments and determined that a Venezuelan man on board the ship was not part of the crew.
The coast guard ordered the ship to remain in port to await officials from the Public Ministry and the National Police, who later confirmed that the substance found in the bundles was cocaine.
The cocaine and the Venezuelan were placed at the disposition of the Public Ministry, the navy said.
