BRENT: As commuters and office goers drove on the roads of Bangkok this morning, a fireball like object rushed from the sky and burnt completely before landing. This took place around 8:40 am local time and since then social media has been hoarded with videos from various dashcams that recorded the incident.
There are a number of angles from which the bright ball of fire blazing briefly has been recorded. It was the morning rush hour and several people saw this blazing fireball dye before lighting up the Thai sky.
The meteor was very obvious and bright and noticed by hundreds but no damage to any building or vehicle has been caused until now. After the social media was set ablaze with the videos from Thailand, several theories have come up about the causes and origin of this fireball that seemed to be a meteor.
Saran Poshyachinda, Deputy Director of National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, told CNN , “There is a high possibility that the object spotted this morning… on social media, is an object from outer space.”
He said, “it was extraterrestrial, as a satellite would have been traveling on a west-east axis, whereas the object travelled in the opposite direction before bursting into flames. It looks like an asteroid travelling to Earth and grazing through the air and it turned into a fireball.”
He added, “It might not weigh that much, I think about a few kilograms.” Gauging from the numerous videos, he said that the fireball burned up about 100 kilometers (62 miles) above the ground.
